In honor of the retirement of Kobe Bryant, I thought it would be appropriate to post Spike Lee’s 2009 documentary, Kobe: Doin’ Work, that follows Bryant throughout a day that he and his Lakers play the San Antonio Spurs.
There are a lot of interesting parallels between Kobe and Bleek from Mo’ Better Blues, in the sense that both take their craft very seriously. Today, Kobe just stated that Michael Jackson is one of his personal mentors because the artist called him when he was 18 to tell him not to lose focus on his craft, even though critics were making fun of how seriously he took the game. Bryant said that Jackson told him “‘Don’t change for them. You have to stay focused. If you wanna be one of the all-time greats you have to study the all-time greats. You have to be obsessive about what you do and how you do it.’”
Lee clearly respects Bryant for this dedication to his craft, and to show this he created this documentary.Unfortunately I cannot embed the video to this post because the file is too large, but a link to the documentary can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Chi8zcJUib4
